Rheumatologists are physicians who specialize in diseases of the joints, muscles, bones and tendons. These medical specialists diagnose and treat arthritis, back pain, muscle strains, common athletic injuries and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. They may work closely with other specialists such as physical therapists and orthopedic surgeons.  Rheumatology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine.
