Pharmacogenetics Symposium - Applying Genetics and Genomics in Oncology Today
Recent advances in cancer genetics have resulted in the development of clinical tests to tailor therapy for the individual patient. Unique genetic information from tumor, such as EGFR mutations in lung cancer and gene signatures in breast cancer, may predict treatment efficacy. The genetic makeup of the individual can influence drug handling, affecting drug levels and uptake and in turn treatment efficacy and toxicity. In addition, inter-geographic and inter-ethnic differences in genetics exist; Asians have unique genetic features that may influence cancer treatment which clinicians in Asia should be aware of. This symposium intends to provide an overview of the current status of genetics in personalizing cancer treatment for the practicing physician.
